Descripción

The Marantaceae is the second largest family in the Zingiberales order, with 30 genera and between 450 and 500 species.  They are found throughout tropical regions, but the greatest number of species is found in the American tropics. This family is distinguished by a swollen pulvinus between the leaf blade and petiole, sigmoid lateral veins and evenly spaced cross veins in the leaf blade, terminal pairs of flowers, and two inner modified stamens which cause an explosive release of pollen.  Many species of this family are used as ornamental plants.
