There are three genera in the Strelitziaceae family: Strelitzia, from southern Africa, with five species; Ravenala, from Madagascar, with one species; and Phenakospermum, from South America, with one species. This family may be distinguished from the other members of the Zingiberales by the birdlike appearance of the inflorescence and the woody, capsular fruit. |
